Civil engineering salaries in the United States have continued their multiyear rise, with average base pay reaching $152,000 in 2026 as demand for experienced engineers remains strong across much of the profession.
The latest ASCE Civil Engineering Salary Report, based on responses from 2,444 Society members, shows average salaries increasing by more than $8,000 compared with 2025. The annual rate of salary growth has remained close to 6%, following increases of around $9,000 in 2025 and $7,000 in 2024.
The upward trend reflects several changes occurring simultaneously across the profession. Infrastructure investment, resilience requirements and a shortage of civil engineers at many levels of experience are increasing competition for technical staff. At the same time, greater use of digital tools and artificial intelligence is not removing the need for engineering judgement. Instead, it is increasing the importance of experienced professionals who can interpret, verify and take responsibility for increasingly automated technical outputs.
The gains are not evenly distributed. Entry-level salaries remained broadly unchanged from the previous year at just above $77,000, suggesting that much of the recent increase is concentrated among engineers with more experience, specialist skills or professional credentials.
Licensure remains one of the clearest differentiators. Engineers holding a Professional Engineer licence reported median incomes nearly $49,000 higher than respondents without licences or certifications. Differences also remain between men and women, with men reporting earnings nearly $30,000 higher in 2026, although the gap becomes smaller when factors such as professional licensure and years of experience are considered, particularly during the earlier stages of a career.
Large variations also appear between sectors and technical fields. Private-sector defence roles reported the highest median income at almost $169,000, closely followed by federal government defence positions. State government salaries remained the lowest among the sectors examined.
The spread between individual lines of business was even greater. Forensic engineering recorded the highest median income at almost $184,000, followed by construction at around $180,000. Structural engineering reported the lowest median income among the disciplines highlighted in the report, at approximately $130,000.
Company size also appears to influence earning potential. Engineers working for organisations with more than 10,000 employees reported a median primary income of $159,000, compared with around $129,000 for those employed by organisations with between one and 10 employees.
Compensation is also extending beyond salary. More than 95% of employers surveyed offered health insurance in 2026, while slightly larger shares of companies are now providing benefits such as paid professional membership fees, maternity and paternity leave and flexible working arrangements.
The overall picture is therefore positive, but increasingly differentiated. Experience, professional licensure, technical specialisation, sector and employer size are all having a substantial influence on earnings. As civil engineering expands into more digitally enabled and resilience-focused work, the salary data also reflects a broader shift in how the profession is being valued and where the strongest demand is emerging.
